Crimean Tatars Climb Chatyr-Dah Mountains To Honor 1944 Deportation Victims
On May 10, about 2,000 people climbed the Chatyr-Dah mountains in Crimea to pray for the victims of the 1944 deportation of Crimean Tatars from their homeland. Many carried Ukrainian flags and chanted, "Crimea is our homeland!" and "Glory to Ukraine!" This year marks the 70th anniversary of the forcible removal of Crimean Tatars from the peninsula, ordered by Soviet leader Josef Stalin. (RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service)
