Violence In Iraq Claims 40 Lives

Violence across Iraq on July 11 claimed at least 40 lives.

Eleven were killed when gunmen fired on two checkpoints guarding oil installations on the road between Haditha and Baiji, some 200 kilometers north of Baghdad.

Another 11 people were killed when a car bomb exploded at a wake in the town of Muqdadiya, 80 kilometers northeast of Baghdad.

Car and roadside bombs and other deadly attacks were also reported in eastern Baghdad, Tikrit, and the western Anbar Province.

The number of people killed in militant attacks across Iraq in June was 761, according to the United Nations.

Violence is still well below the height of sectarian bloodletting in 2006-07, when the monthly death toll sometimes exceeded 3,000.
