Moldovan Farmer Upbeat Despite Russia's Fruit Ban
Many farmers in Moldova have been hit hard by Russia's ban on fruit imports from their country. The restrictions came after Chisinau signed and ratified a deal on closer ties with the European Union, although officially Russia cited "systematic violations of sanitary requirements" as the reason for the ban. But Alexei Ivanov, the owner of a peach farm some 60 kilometers north of Chisinau, says the ban will force Moldovan farmers to improve the quality of their produce in order to access new, more lucrative European markets.
