Security officials in Pakistan say Pakistani fighter jets launched air strikes early on June 15 against at least eight militant hideouts in the country's troubled northwest, killing dozens of militants.
They say Abu Abdul Rehman al-Maani, a militant leader thought to have helped orchestrate a five-hour airport siege in Karachi on June 8, was among those killed.
The strikes targeted the mountainous Dehgan area, about 25 kilometers west of Miranshah -- capital of the North Waziristan tribal district and a stronghold for Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked militants.
Pakistani military officials say the strikes were launched after authorities confirmed the presence of Uzbek militants and others there.
Pakistan’s Taliban and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan said Uzbek fighters took part in the assault a week ago on Karachi’s international airport -- killing 38 people including the militant attackers.
