SCO Military Exercises Due To Enter Final Stage

Army chiefs from the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) are due to monitor the final stage of ongoing antiterrorist drills in China on August 29.

Around 7,000 servicemen from China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan are participating in the six-day exercises.

The chiefs of general staffs of China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan met in Beijing on August 28.

They agreed to improve joint antiterrorism operations.

Russian military chief Valery Gerasimov said terrorism, separatism, extremism, and drug trafficking pose a serious threat to joint security.

Chinese military chief Fang Fenghui said the situation around Afghanistan was becoming more complicated and "terrorists are rapidly infiltrating into Central Asia."

The SCO is a security alliance dominated by Russia and China and seen as a counterweight to NATO.

Based on reporting by Interfax, ITAR-TASS, and Xinhua

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
