Seven Dead After Police, Religious Activists Clash In Pakistan

At least seven people have been killed and more than 80 wounded in clashes between Pakistani police and followers of an influential preacher in the eastern city of Lahore.

The clashes involved supporters of Tahir-ul-Qadri, a Canada-based cleric who heads an Islamic charity and the Pakistan Awami Tehreek political party.

Qadri came to Pakistan last year to lead mass demonstrations against the government and has once again announced his intention to return to the country this month.

The clashes overnight on June 17 began when police went to Qadri's residence to remove security barricades put up by his supporters.

Following the clashes, both police and Qadri's supporters blamed each other for using live ammunition.
