The Sykes-Picot Agreement was a secret accord between Britain and France, with the assent of Russia, to dismember the Ottoman Empire in the event of its defeat in World War I. It foresaw granting the three participating powers direct territorial control in the Middle East and the establishment of "A" and "B" Zones -- French and British protectorates in much of what is now Syria and Iraq.
