Kurds Celebrate Success In Turkish Elections
Kurds celebrated after the main Kurdish party, the HDP, won seats in the Turkish parliament for the first time ever. The HDP secured 13 percent of the vote, clearing the 10 percent barrier for entry to parliament. Their success came as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (AKP) failed to win an overall majority in parliament and fell well short of the two-thirds majority it needed to change the constitution and turn Turkey into a presidential republic. HDP leader Selahattin Demirtas said these plans had now been scuppered. (Reuters)
