Flooding Still Wreaking Havoc In Central Europe, Balkans

Evacuated villagers in a makeshift camp near Rast, 380 kilometers west of the Romanian capital Bucharest (epa) April 24, 2006 -- Floods in Central and Southeast Europe have forced thousands to flee their homes and ruined tens of thousands of hectares of farmland.

In Romania, the worst-hit country, more than 1,000 people abandoned their homes overnight as nearby dikes broke.


Reports say 5 percent of Serbia's arable land is submerged, while almost 2,500 people have evacuated in Hungary.


Many ports along the River Danube in Romania, Serbia, and Bulgaria remain closed.
