A monument to the victims of the Aksy shooting in the town of Bospiek (RFE/RL)
June 15, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- Kyrgyzstan's Prosecutor-General Elmurza Satybaldiev met today with a group of protesters demanding an investigation into the fatal shootings of six protesters in the southern Aksy district in March 2002, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reported.
The protesters are relatives of those killed in Aksy. Satybaldiev promised a thorough investigation would be made, including inquiries into who ordered police to fire on the protesters.
Some relatives of the victims have been staging a hunger strike outside Kyrgyzstan's Supreme Court to demand that the court review the circumstances surrounding the killings.
The Supreme Court had planned this week to begin to reviewing the investigation of five years ago, which never identified who was responsible for the police crackdown, but the court postponed its review until later this month.
