Belarusian KGB Confiscates Opposition Activists' Computers

The offices of opposition forces were already searched in Homel on January 10.

HOMEL, Belarus -- Committee for State Security (KGB) officers have searched the homes of the regional leaders of a Belarusian opposition party and human rights organization, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.

The apartments of the United Civic Party's (AHP) regional branch leader, Vasil Palyakou, and Rights Initiative leader Leanid Sudalenka were searched today by KGB officers in the western city of Homel.

Palyakou and Sudalenka said the officers confiscated their personal computers, CDs, and memory sticks. KGB officers and police also searched AHP offices in Homel.

The officers told AHP officials the searches were being conducted in conjunction with investigations into the "illegal mass protest actions" held in Minsk on December 19-20.

Hundreds of people and several of the opposition presidential candidates were jailed for protesting against alleged fraud in the December 19 election, which officially returned incumbent Alyaksandr Lukashenka to power despite widespread reports by international and domestic election observers of electoral irregularities.
