Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) is seeking its next Comptroller in Washington, DC.  The Comptroller reports to the CFO and is a critical member of the finance management team for this international nonprofit organization operating in over 20 countries.

Our Comptroller position allows for hybrid work (2 days office/3 days home), generous benefits (25 vacation days, 13 sick days, 10-12 holidays annually, great 401k matching, generous health insurance, etc.), and travel to beautiful Prague, Czech Republic as needed! Who we are:

RFE/RL is a multi-platform media organization (digital, TV, radio) with a budget of approx. $142 million and a mission to provide uncensored news in local languages to countries where press freedom is under threat. https://www.rferl.org/ We employ over 1,400 staff (60+ nationalities) in 20+ countries and engage thousands of freelancers.

RFE/RL is a private, nonprofit Sec. 501(c)3 corporation, and is funded by a grant from the U.S. Congress through the United States Agency for Global Media (USAGM) as a private grantee.

 

The role:

Reporting to the CFO in Washington, DC, the Comptroller serves as a valuable member of the finance managerial team. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversight of daily accounting functions (payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, journal entries)
  • Documents and implements an internal control system that continuously monitors critical areas of financial control, identifies problems and implements corrective action.
  • Annual financial statement and audit preparation, ensuring the annual audits are performed in accordance with GAAP, applicable OMB Circulars, and/or other applicable regulatory standards.
  • Prepare and submit federal and state and municipal government filings and reports.
  • Maintain cash schedule and assist with cash flow forecasting.
  • Ensure monthly preparation and sign-off of all balance sheet account analyses and reconciliations.
  • Oversees accounting personnel in Prague, DC and Bureau offices; 5 direct reports, team of 30+.
  • Provides financial input to the organization's strategic planning process, assuring that a long-range financial plan is part of the strategic plan, and that the plan is updated at least annually.

 

What we are looking for:

  • Demonstrated very strong accounting skills and work experience in a nonprofit setting (mandatory)
  • BA in accounting, finance, or related field – or equivalent in experience (mandatory)
  • CPA (highly desired)
  • 5+ years’ experience as Director or Comptroller with an organization that has annual revenues of at least $20 million (highly desired) and receives federal grants (mandatory).
  • 3+ years’ work experience with a non-profit that receives US government funding (highly desired)
  • 10+ years of progressively responsible managerial experience that includes budgeting, financial forecasting, planning, organizing and managing multiple financial activities. (highly desired)
  • International organization or ‘work abroad’ experience (highly desired)
  • US regulatory, legal compliance experience (highly desired)

 

Annual Pay Range:

The annual pay range for this position is $120,645 - $180,967.

Appointment against this post is on a D.C. basis only. Candidates for these positions must reside within commuting distance of Washington D.C., or be willing to relocate. In some cases, if selected for a D.C.-based position from another part of the United States, RFE/RL would cover the costs of interview travel and relocation upon appointment. RFE/RL offers a competitive salary and benefits package.
