Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) is looking to hire a Senior Graphics/Data Journalist to join the team in our broadcasting headquarters in Prague.
The Graphics & Data Desk in the RFE/RL central newsroom plays a crucial role in enhancing storytelling on digital platforms by integrating visual and data-driven content into news coverage. They leverage design, data, and technology to present complex information in clear, engaging and visually compelling formats that enhance understanding of stories by our audience.
You will produce high-quality visual and data-driven storytelling across a global, digital-first newsroom. You will use graphic design, data analysis, and visual journalism to deliver engaging, informative, and innovative content that complements and adds value to our news coverage.
The successful candidate will report to the Executive Producer and work in close collaboration with the language services and other main hubs in the central newsroom to provide a comprehensive response on international news stories and ensure that the highest production and editorial values are met on RFE/RL’s content, thus maximizing its reach to audiences.
What you will accomplish:
- Pitch compelling visual stories for the web, sourcing ideas from within your newsroom and from colleagues across the organization.
- Produce visual content on short-term (daily), near-term (weekly), and long-term schedules.
- Assist with providing editorial oversight of content produced by the rest of the team.
- Collect and analyze data on an ongoing basis.
- Work with RFE/RL language services to produce content for their audiences.
- Create and maintain tooling that makes our journalism more accessible to language services and audiences.
What you bring:
- 3-5 years’ experience as both a developer and an editor with a portfolio of work to match, track record of delivering to deadlines in a high-pressured news environment.
- One or two specializations, such as GIS analysis, 3D, animation, or responsive design.
- Proficiency with a Javascript framework such as Svelte, Vue, or React.
- Experience creating visually engaging infographics, charts, and data visualizations for digital platforms.
- Strong understanding of storytelling techniques using graphics and data and the ability to clearly communicate complex data; ability to visually display quantitative data.
- Well-versed in web development, including Javascript/Typescript, HTML, CSS, and Git.
- Regional knowledge or news awareness in RFE/RL’s broadcast region, or – experience contextualizing and clarifying issues relevant to our broadcast region and mission.
- Fluency in English is required and at least one other RFE/RL language is highly desirable.
- Strong interpersonal skills and experience in effective collaboration with editorial teams and non-technical stakeholders, building relationships and producing projects across departments.
- Flexibility and excellent organizational skills to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
