Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) is seeking the Deputy Head of News in our broadcasting headquarters in Prague, the Czech Republic. You will report to and work closely with the Vice President & Editor in Chief on leading our language services, the newsroom, as well as bureaus across various geographies. You will be instrumental in shaping and implementing the strategic direction of the News division, fostering excellence in our journalism, ensuring adherence to our high editorial standards and leading initiatives focused on audience engagement, impact and growth.

The role:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Leading and mentoring a diverse team of senior editors, fostering a culture of collaboration, creativity and journalistic integrity;
  • Building and nurturing strategic partnerships with stakeholders across the organization;
  • Overseeing news operations in complex and challenging environments, with a focus on Russia and Ukraine, ensuring safety, security, and editorial excellence;
  • Guiding journalists and editors in delivering compelling, balanced, and impactful stories on complex issues, driving engagement and audience growth;
  • Managing the financial resources and budget of the division, ensuring efficient allocation and utilization of funds to support strategic priorities and operational needs;
  • Navigating and effectively managing crisis situations.

 

What we are looking for:

  • Advanced degree in journalism, mass communication, international relations, other relevant field, or the equivalent in experience. 
  • 10 years of professional journalism experience in an international fast paced western media environment. Previous experience working in a multicultural or a multinational environment, living and working abroad, preferably in relevant RFE/RL target region; experience managing financial resources, organizing work processes and team building.
  • Proven track record of leadership in newsroom environments, with extensive experience managing teams in hostile or high-risk settings.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships and collaborate effectively across diverse teams and cultures.
  • Demonstrated expertise in driving change management, fostering innovation, and leading content strategy.
  • Passion for journalism, with a commitment to upholding the principles of press freedom, democracy and human rights.
  • Proficiency in English language and fluency in at least one target region language.
